師出以律，否臧，凶。

象曰：師出以律；失律，凶也。

An army must set out under strict discipline. Where discipline is poor, misfortune follows.

在師中吉，无咎；王三錫命。

象曰：在師中吉，承天寵也。王三錫命，懷萬邦也。

In the midst of the army, holding command and keeping to the middle way — good fortune and no blame, honoured again and again by the ruler.

師或輿尸，凶。

象曰：師或輿尸，大无功也。

The army comes back carrying corpses: a heavy defeat. Misfortune.

師左次，无咎。

象曰：左次无咎，未失常也。

The army withdraws and camps, avoiding the enemy's edge for now. No blame.

田有禽，利執言，无咎。長子帥師，弟子輿尸，貞凶。

象曰：長子帥師，以中行也。弟子輿尸，使不當也。

There is game in the field; it is right to hunt it (the campaign has just cause). Appoint the elder as commander and there is good fortune; employ an unworthy youth and defeat follows.

大君有命，開國承家，小人勿用。

象曰：大君有命，以正功也。小人勿用，必亂邦也。

The great ruler apportions rewards, founding states and enfeoffing lords. The petty must not be given office.
