䷯ 水風井

井泥不食，舊井无禽。

象曰：井泥不食，下也。舊井无禽，時舍也。

The mud at the bottom of the well cannot be drunk; not even birds come to an abandoned well.

井谷射鮒，瓮敝漏。

象曰：井谷射鮒，无與也。

The water in the well serves only for shooting at minnows, and the jug is cracked and leaking — ability that finds no use.

井渫不食，為我心惻，可用汲，王明，并受其福。

象曰：井渫不食，行惻也。求王明，受福也。

The well has been cleaned and still no one drinks; this is a grief to the heart. The water can be drawn — may the king see clearly, and high and low share the blessing together.

井甃，无咎。

象曰：井甃无咎，修井也。

Lining the well with stone — putting oneself in order. No blame.

井冽，寒泉食。

象曰：寒泉之食，中正也。

The well water is clear and cool; the cold spring may be drunk — virtue that reaches others.

井收勿幕，有孚元吉。

象曰：元吉在上，大成也。

The well stands open and uncovered, its bounty for all and held back from none. There is good faith. Great good fortune.
