虞吉，有他不燕。

象曰：初九虞吉，志未變也。

Resting in good faith, single-hearted — good fortune. Seek something else besides, and the heart finds no peace.

鳴鶴在陰，其子和之，我有好爵，吾與爾靡之。

象曰：其子和之，中心愿也。

A crane calls in the shade and its young answer. I have a good goblet and will share it with you — sincerity meeting sincerity.

得敵，或鼓或罷，或泣或歌。

象曰：可鼓或罷，位不當也。

Meeting an equal match: now drumming, now stopping, now weeping, now singing — the heart with no master of its own, swayed by what is outside it.

月几望，馬匹亡，无咎。

象曰：馬匹亡，絕類上也。

The moon is near full but not brimming. The horse loses its mate and goes on upward apart from its kind — single-minded in serving what is above. No blame.

有孚攣如，无咎。

象曰：有孚攣如，位正當也。

Binding all under heaven together in good faith. No blame.

翰音登于天，貞凶。

象曰：翰音登于天，何可長也。

The cock's crow trying to climb to heaven — empty sound seeking a name with nothing behind it. Even holding on brings misfortune.
